The under 11s signed off the league season away at Wirral on an overcast Sunday morning. Skipper Will M won the toss and elected to bat.
The team got off to a fast start with Tom and Will M back opening together and managing 28 off the first 4 overs. Ollie and Joe came next and kept up the same rate. The run rate slipped a bit with the next two pairs, but was still very healthy before a late flourish from Alex and Teddy brought us to an excellent final total of 323. Alex continued his recent good form with 26, Tom (21) also broke the twenty barrier, while Ollie (17), Joe and Thomas (both 13) and Harrison (10) all managed double figures.
The Wirral reply suffered an immediate set back as Harrison bowled the first batsman with the first ball of their innings. Another 7 wickets followed in the next 4 overs, with Ben snagging two catches in the space of 3 balls behind the stumps off Thomas's bowling. Another 7 wickets followed in the rest of the game, with Ben taking a third catch - this time a good caught and bowled after he had relinquished keeping duties - part of a two wickets in two balls burst for him. The star performer was Freya though, who took 3 wickets for 9 runs off her 3 overs, including a wicket maiden. Teddy, Joe, Will M and Alex also took wickets and the team managed 3 run outs on top. Wirral never recovered from the initial burst of wickets, only getting back to their starting point in the final over to finish on a total of 212.
A great fielding and bowling display, full of confidence, to end the league campaign with 5 wins and 3 narrow defeats from our 8 games played. While a successful season, it was less than the team were capable of and so needs to be viewed with some level of disappointment. However the team improved again and it was particularly pleasing to see so many players get personal best scores and improve their wicket tallies during the year as well as newer members slot into the squad and perform.
This week's Mars Bar Moment goes to Freya. Loads of moments to choose from but it couldn't go to anyone else really. Thanks to all the team for their efforts and to the parents and helpers for their support.
